A Unique Vision

An hour’s drive southwest of Venice lies the community of Villamarzana, home to about 1,200 residents. In 2000, Gigi Stecca embarked on an ambitious project that garnered attention far and wide: he opened a restaurant just minutes from the town center, incorporating two airplanes and a helicopter into its design.

The Inspiration

Stecca’s inspiration stemmed from his decade-long experience managing retirement homes, where he noticed a recurring sentiment among elderly residents: a longing to experience being aboard an aircraft. Determined to fulfill this dream, he established a restaurant featuring a Douglas DC-6, a Tupolev TU-134 A, a control tower, and a helicopter.

The Restaurant Experience

Named “Michelangelo da Vinci,” the restaurant was adorned with replicas of works by Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Stecca, also a brewer, created a unique dining experience with large pizzas, an extensive beer selection served in custom glasses, and a menu that included sandwiches, bruschetta, salads, nightly fish specials, and homemade desserts.

The Decline

Despite its initial success and unique appeal, the restaurant faced legal challenges over zoning violations. These ongoing battles with the local government led to its closure in 2014. Since then, the airplanes have been left abandoned, their once vibrant atmosphere replaced by silence and decay.

Exploring the Remains

Today, the site of Michelangelo da Vinci stands as a testament to Stecca’s unfulfilled dream. Visitors to the compound will find weather-beaten planes overlooking a green, overgrown pool. Inside the planes, dusty and litter-strewn interiors still hold the allure of the cockpit control panels, inviting exploration.

Visiting the Abandoned Restaurant

Directions

To visit the abandoned restaurant, take the exit for Villamarzana and turn right. After about half a mile, you’ll see the unmistakable sight of the giant planes on your left.

Tips for Visitors

While the site is abandoned, it remains a fascinating place to explore. Respect the property, avoid removing any objects, and be cautious as you navigate the overgrown and dilapidated areas. The compound offers a glimpse into a unique and ambitious project that, despite its ultimate failure, continues to capture the imagination of those who visit.
