1112 Dickinson Ave, Greenville , NC 27834

Conceived as a showcase by Jacob W. Higgs and his brothers, this house showcases intricate architectural details that epitomize the pinnacle of early 20th-century design. From its asymmetrical exterior to its ornate pressed tin ceilings, every aspect of this home radiates charm and sophistication.

Step inside, and you’ll be greeted by a stunning entryway adorned with intricate wainscoting, elaborate newel posts, and beautifully turned Eastlake spindlework. The original slate roof, installed by Mrs. Higgs’s brother, along with decorative embossed metal ceilings, further enhances the home’s distinctive character.

Over the years, the J.W. Higgs House has undergone various transformations, including a brief period as The Gathering Place Restaurant in the 1970s. In 1987, it found new purpose under the ownership of Bishop Arizona H. Hartsfield and James A. Brown, who utilized it as the headquarters for Faith House, a Christian-based organization dedicated to assisting the homeless and individuals transitioning from incarceration.

Today, the J.W. Higgs House is in need of significant restoration, requiring a new roof and updates to its systems. While there have been discussions of demolition, a 365-day delay has been granted to facilitate collaborative efforts among potential buyers, Preservation North Carolina, City of Greenville staff, and the Historic Preservation Commission. The goal is to explore options for preserving this historic landmark and ensuring its continued significance in the community.
