In North Philadelphia, the Blue Horizon is a landmark in boxing history. Featured in Rocky V, this iconic arena was celebrated by Sports Illustrated as the last great boxing venue in the United States.
Built in 1865, the Blue Horizon started as three separate four-story houses. Over the years, it evolved into a beloved boxing venue, attracting fans and fighters from far and wide. Its rich history and unique charm have made it a legend in the world of boxing.
Boxing matches became a regular feature at the Blue Horizon starting in 1961, hosting many iconic bouts. But it wasn’t just boxing that made history there; in November 1985, the legendary punk rock band The Dead Kennedys performed on its stage. Despite its rich and vibrant history, the Blue Horizon closed its doors in 2010.
The Blue Horizon’s building and ring gained additional fame from their appearance in Rocky V. However, its glory days are now behind it, as the historic arena is set to be transformed into a Moxy brand Marriott Hotel.
