Nestled in the lush hills of Tuscany, Italy, the Castello di Sammezzano is a stunning example of Moorish Revival architecture. Castello di Sammezzano’s origins trace back to the Roman era, but its current form emerged in the 19th century. In 1605, the noble Spanish Ximenes d’Aragona family purchased the estate. The most significant transformation occurred under Ferdinando Panciatichi Ximenes D’Aragona, who extensively remodeled the castle between 1853 and 1889. Inspired by the Oriental and Moorish styles he admired during his travels, Ferdinando infused the castle with these exotic architectural elements.
The Castello di Sammezzano is celebrated for its breathtaking interiors, boasting a variety of elaborate rooms, each distinguished by its own distinctive design and color palette. Among its most renowned spaces is the Peacock Room, known for its vibrant array of colors and intricate patterns. Equally impressive are the Hall of Mirrors, the White Room, and the Moorish Room, each adorned with intricate stuccoes, arches, and mosaics that immerse visitors in a rich tapestry of historical and cultural splendor.
Despite its grandeur, the Castello di Sammezzano fell into disrepair after World War II. Although briefly used as a luxury hotel in the mid-20th century, it was ultimately abandoned in the 1990s.
