This medieval masterpiece, Burg Eltz, has been perched above the Elzbach River for centuries, seemingly untouched by time. One of the few castles in the region to have survived the ravages of war and the wear of history. It still stands much as it did hundreds of years ago. Remarkably, the castle has stayed in the same family for over 850 years, spanning 33 generations, which is a testament to its enduring legacy and the careful stewardship of its owners.
Though the Eltz family first settled in the castle during the 12th century, they continued expanding and renovating it for generations. Burg Eltz wasn’t fully completed until between 1490 and 1540. With 80 rooms, it remains occupied today and retains much of its original medieval charm. Local legends even suggest that the castle is haunted by the spirits of knights from centuries past, adding an eerie layer to its rich history.
