Relocation to the Marshlands
As the popularity of Milano Marittima grew, so did the complaints from neighboring residents about the late-night revelry. To address these concerns, the Woodpecker was relocated to the marshlands on the town’s outskirts. This move necessitated a new venue, and the owners enlisted architect Filippo Monti to create a unique space for the club’s revival.
An Architectural Marvel
Monti’s design was as innovative as it was bold. Inspired by a casual conversation with the club owner, Monti envisioned a circular structure set on the water. Though the idea of crocodiles was a joke, the circular layout was not. Construction began in 1966, culminating in a futuristic nightclub capped by a massive fiberglass dome. This midcentury modern marvel featured open archways around its perimeter, creating a seamless blend of indoor and outdoor spaces. By 1968, the new Woodpecker Disco was open for business, ready to reclaim its status as a nightlife hotspot.
The Final Curtain
Tragically, the Woodpecker’s revival was short-lived. An electrical fire in the mid-1970s ravaged the club, leaving only the iconic dome standing. Despite the owner’s efforts to navigate the bureaucratic maze and reopen the venue, the club never regained its former glory. The Woodpecker Disco faded into memory, remembered by its owner as “the history of a great restaurant.”
A New Chapter for the Dome
In the years following its closure, the abandoned dome of the Woodpecker Disco found new life. The unique structure became a canvas for raves, parties, and artistic expression. Among the most notable contributions is the artwork of the enigmatic Italian street artist known as “Blu,” who left his mark on the dome, adding to its mystique and allure.
