Opened in 1995, Loudoun Castle Theme Park in Ayrshire, Scotland, found its home amidst the captivating ruins of Loudoun Castle in Galston. The concept of building a theme park within castle ruins wasn’t new in the UK, with Alton Towers in Staffordshire being a prime example of its success. However, while parks like Alton Towers and Drayton Manor have stood the test of time, Loudoun Castle faced challenges.
With origins tracing back to the 12th century, Loudoun Castle is steeped in history, rumored to have once been the residence of William Wallace’s great grandparents. What remains of the grand estate today mostly dates back to the 1800s when it was reconstructed for the Countess of Loudoun. The castle boasted an impressive 90 rooms, a 10,000-volume library, and earned the unofficial title of the ‘Windsor of Scotland’ under her stewardship.
A keep was originally constructed on the site in Galston, Ayrshire, during the 15th century, and later underwent extensions in the 17th century. This structure served as the residence of the Mure-Campbell family, who held the title of Earls of Loudoun. In the early 19th century, the building underwent significant remodeling, transforming it into a grand country house. However, tragedy struck in 1942 when the building was ravaged by fire. Lacking the necessary funds for restoration, it was left to deteriorate into ruin.
Loudoun Castle Theme Park emerged on the scene in 1995, established by a London-based company. Subsequently, it was acquired by Raymond Codona, a traveling showman. Codona later sold the park to Henk Bembom’s Parkware Ltd. in 2002. Bembom made substantial investments in the theme park, relocating several rides from his Margate site in England to enhance the park’s offerings.
Nearly destroyed by fire in 1941, the mansion’s most unexpected chapter unfolded in 1995 when the castle grounds were transformed into an amusement park, featuring three roller coasters and a variety of other attractions. However, when Loudoun Castle closed its doors in 2010, many of these rides found new homes at other theme parks. Today, all that remains are the somber remnants of this rather unconventional addition to one of Scotland’s most distinguished homes.
The park faced challenges following the tragic death of ride operator Mark Blackwood in 2007. The 18-year-old fell from an 80-foot (24-meter) height while attempting to dislodge a stuck roller coaster. Although Loudoun Castle was acquitted in the ensuing trial, the incident irreparably tarnished the theme park’s reputation.
In 2010, just a few months following the trial, the park shut down and was left deserted after the operating company faced financial difficulties. The owner declared that the park was no longer economically sustainable, and attempts were made to sell it as a functioning entity. Unfortunately, this endeavor fell through, leading to the relocation of some rides to Lightwater Valley Theme Park, while others were put up for sale.
